A Question About Newtown in Henley

We've received a question about Newtown in Henley which we do not know the answer to. Can anybody out there help? Here's the question…

"According to the 1871 census my great-great-grandfather Job Wilkins, father of Henry of 'H.Wilkins & Son', lived at "Newtown, Back Road, Henley". I've been unable to identify a 'Back Road' in Newtown or anywhere it might have been. Can anyone help please?"

As we take advantage of this superb spell of weather with the real chance of some records being broken, an outside chance of 30°C (86°F) in some favoured spots like Gravesend, here's a few thoughts on the winter ahead.

The point may be that whilst such a strong area of high pressure sitting over Europe and dragging winds up from North Africa is great for this present situation there is also a lot of talk about blocking weather patterns this winter. I wonder if this is a precursor to a cold or very cold and early start to winter. In truth no one really knows but with possible patterns that can occur out of this present situation we do have a real conflict of forecasting going on at the moment. Without naming the sites we go from mild and fairly wet to possibly one of the coldest and snowiest weather on record. Of course they are drawing similar data as one source but others include other sources such as solar.

Now while the high pressure stays where it is we will continue to enjoy good weather but it will migrate north north west and stay strong. We will then import our winds from the east. Although initially this will only make subtle differences as we move further into October there's the possibility of establishing itself with a new centre over Scandinavia. Then things begin to get very interesting. So watch this space!! In the mean time, like the rest of us, enjoy it while its here.

I have to say after receiving a few complaints about parking charges at Mill Meadows in Henley (which we have no influence on) that I can understand them. Not only are the day to day charges high they increase for the weekends and bank holidays. And of course for the regatta they're almost double which I suppose is the norm.

What about the family that wants to visit a lovely area who are like many strapped for cash? I am not sure what to make of it other than I don't believe this is right. To me it boarders on exploitation. It may be that many people that come to the regatta can afford it but that does not justify the cost. We are used to price increases for certain things during the regatta but I really think this sucks and should be reviewed and reduced to a consistent price on first come first serve basis. I know revenue needs to increase but I as a Henley person find this does not enhance our town so fully understand why visitors feel this way.

Now it makes no difference to me but I feel it's not right.

After talking to a few more local people (sadly some who are leaving Henley after many years) we got talking about the "good old days". Well they certainly were simpler. We talked of what Henley was about long before the commercial festivals, etc. It was a lovely town then as it is now but with many businesses that employed many people. We were trying to recall all the businesses that have now long since gone. I feel we need to remind newcomers and others that the town was a hive of light industry. The ones listed here are only a few and just span my era.

The big one that's left is Stuart Turners who are probably the biggest celebrity of the town being world famous for its pumps. Many of which I believe are still operating around the world. Like the clock in Canada?

Hard to Believe

It's hard to believe that it's only APRIL! I know! Especially when you think this is as good as it gets in any summer. We're being totally spoilt and not just with the weather but the trees and plants. And, yes, the ash is behind the oak. Oak before ash, summer will be a splash!!

Hard to believe that this country has two thirds of the world's bluebells. Is that right? If it is we are once again spoilt by such a tremendous display of a carpet colour set against the lush green of the surrounding woods.

Hard to believe that camping and staying at home (UK) has increased by 30%? And not just down to the recession. Apparently made more popular (but what a lot of us already knew) by programmes like Coast, Countryfile, British Isle. Selfishly, please no more. Let's keep them as our best kept secrets.

Not hard to believe when people tell me (as I know) that places like Scotland, the moors and others a-like are fantastically beautiful and unspoilt and so they are. The answer always given is that they have one thing in common; no b****r lives there!!

Apparently there is a wedding taking place at the end of the month! Now, with April heading towards becoming the warmest on record can this weather stay as good as it has been and as good as it looks into the near future? Well for some forecasters at least, yes, but I see one site shows a total breakdown from the 25th right up to Monday 2nd May. Rain on every day!!

I think for what it's worth that we will see more unsettled activity in that week but more on a showery basis and always on the warm side.

Well can we believe it but 35 years ago today we tied the knot at Trinity Church in Henley and now every day I cycle by that very church and sometimes wonder where all those years have gone. The weather in Henley was exactly as it is today. Yes, you might have expected that would get a mention!

Kids. One of the truest things that your parents and grandparents will say which is totally true is to fulfil your lives the best way you can. Because as they/we would say time just goes so fast. Looking ahead 30 years seemed an eternity away back then but now we're here it seems like yesterday.

Initials in Brick Wall

I've been meaning to put this on before now.

Every day I cycle past (Impressed eh! Even if it is electric.) Holy Trinity Church on Greys Hill. The wall that stretches by its full length has initials carved out (see photo) and as yet I cannot find out what they represent. Have they been there since the church was completed and opened in 1848?

I can find no reference to them. Can you help?

Sitting on the Fence

I see now that the new (not needed) fence is partly in place on 44 acres (40 acres). Having seen all the people walking over the fields for 30+ years (at least) I wonder if these same people are going to keep behind this expensive charade? I am not sure of the figures but believe it to have cost in the region of £10,000. So a total waste.

I was also informed (well, ill informed) by a local councillor that it had nothing to do with any local farms but have been told that this is not the case. Please verify!

They would have been far better putting in a stile and signs to encourage people to walk the fields but to also take responsibility for their dogs, if they have them, and litter. I fully accept this to be a responsible position whether livestock are in the field or not.

It will be interesting to see if and when livestock, other than the sheep for a short time of the year, will be in there.

I just get the feeling that we seem to be getting more and more hemmed in by ugly "keep out fencing" where once we could all walk responsibly in our lovely countryside. Look at the Marlow Road and I believe now up The Mount (not been there recently).

On a similar vein…

I don't think I am the the only one that thinks like this. Well I know I am not the only one! We share respect for people's land and that should always be the case but when people move in to the area and complain that there is a footpath through it and want it moved that should never happen. If it's been a footpath for hundreds of years, if not longer, it should remain one.

By the way. What was sitting on the fence? A buzzard. So some use for it!!

Rubbish/Garbage/Trash

What a stunning morning. A real Spring feel.

So today I decided to go for a lunchtime walkabout to draw in some of that extra vitamin C (or D, I think?!? Here's a point, the bigger you are, do you get more or less?

So off I went round Station Road with that monstrosity hub building to the right yet on the left side it is degenerating into an eyesore. Now the first thing people see coming off the train is the awful building on the right and in front of the the run down building across the road. If ever there was a need of regeneration in Henley this must be it.

I carry on my walk along our lovely riverside right up to New Street and as always I'm on the look out for different things. As I am on the edge I am looking into the water what do I see? Every few feet there's "rubbish"; mainly beer, wine and champagne bottles. I wonder where this all comes from and why is there so much of it?

It lead me to think. If it is that bad on the edge, imagine how bad it must be down the middle and more so along the regatta course. I took photos years ago of the litter that was left in the drainage channels, etc. at various times of the year and of course it's especially bad after the regatta and festivals. I suppose as it's not seen it doesn't matter. Well it does and it should.

I might be wrong but I do not believe that the river is dredged any more and I am not aware anyone takes responsibility to clearing the litter in the river but if they do great. If they don't, why not?

Are there laws around that make takeaways responsible for their rubbish? If so we need to apply the same rules to the river and the people who supply the drinks, etc.

I know I am far from the only one that thinks like this but we really should get to grips with it rather than using creating river fill!!!

Evacuees in Henley

We have received an enquiry from a website visitor trying to trace some information regarding her mother's time as an evacuee in Henley.

Her mother was evacuated on 13th June 1940 from Redbridge Primary School in Ilford with her sister and stayed with a Mrs Lee whom she believes resided on Weston Road in Henley. She would like to trace this home of Mrs Lee at White Cross, Weston Road, Henley-on-Thames. Mr. Lee ran a local garage on Caversham Road. Her mothers maiden name was Pauline Beecher Goater and her younger sister was called Pamela.

Her mother would like to trace where she and her sister lived during this period of her life when she was parted from the rest of her family and would like to visit in early spring.

Is it not just great to be able to walk around Henley in places like 44 Acres just off Tilebarn Lane? For many years, man and boy with dogs, we have roamed and enjoyed the views on these mounds watching the decline of the elms. Even used by kids of all ages for sledging when the occasion is called for but alas it looks to be no longer. After all these 40/50 years of roaming these fields it is coming to a possible end with an unnecessary and expensive fence.

Sad all this progress. Is it not!?!

By the way I am reliably informed (I hope!) that all of us using these fields have been trespassing for those same number of years. Or is it just now a right of way?

Trespassers will be prosecuted signs? Sorry, haven't seen them. Oh I have in the college grounds. That seems to work.

Will it be "Keep your dogs on a lead. Poison bait." where there are livestock or will it be a simple:

"KEEP OUT"

I am all in favour of protecting livestock but this could be done at a fraction of the cost by reinforcing the fence that's already there. There's no need to make a new one which is what's proposed. This is where it falls down as there is no need as the FOOTPATH is already there. So the fence must be to keep us out otherwise there is no justification, I think.

Newtown Football Club

I read with great disappointed about the end of Newtown Football Club after 60 years and note Reg and Margaret's thanks to a number of people, surprisingly including myself.

It goes without saying to anyone who knows these two people (that will be many) that they need to receive the biggest thank you of all. Over the years Reg and Margaret did more than anyone could have done to maintain this club for so long. We will miss them in that capacity and it just shows you the standing of these two that even with this sad end they are able to take the time to say thank you to others.

No, Reg and Margaret, the biggest thanks go to you and that will come from all us who found themselves playing, running the lines, doing the admin, etc. Without you Newtown would have never ever made it this far.

Enjoy these more relaxed if slightly sad times. It was a lot of fun.

Waxwings

What a pleasant surprise as I was cycling to work this morning. Being of interest in everything about nature but a twitcher!! I come across the first personal sightings I have seen or recall of this winter visitor, especially when Europe and Scandinavia are so cold they migrate ever westward in search of food. I believe they eat mainly berries which is where I saw this lot and also grouped together on the aerials. I don't know about you but there's that sense of satisfaction of seeing something maybe not rare but uncommon and crossing it off the list. Just like the swallowtail butterflies a couple of years back and I still have 20+ butterflies to see that are native to Oxfordshire, let alone the British Isles.

By the way waxwings collective noun is an "earful" and a "museum" so next time the wife has a comment to me I shall quip, "you sound like a waxwing". I thought that would be better than the museum!

Here we go, not blogged for a while.

While out on the morning constitution again…boy how warm it feels after all the cold - wet but warm! Still weather's for another blog.

Looking in the air and everywhere else for that matter. I'm just naturally inquisitive or nosy, I think others might say. Yes, the masters of flight are gliding in the air; the fabulous red kites. Not 5, not 10, not 20 but at least 32! I kid you not and there were probably more. What a sight. Great at any time but this is the most I have seen in one go. I know there have been greater sightings but 32 was none-the-less a spectacle to be seen. My theory as to why so many is that we now have the milder weather and the easy pickings of the abundance of worms. Al la carte wormery - if that's good English. Or French!!

I guess you will find this hard to believe as well. A few years back at a similar time of year the ground was saturated but you could hear the worms just below the ground. Honest, otherwise I better get the tinnitus sorted!

Lunar Eclipse

Tomorrow sees a unique event; a full lunar eclipse. Not in itself a rarity, but the fact that it coincides with the winter solstice is a rarity. I believe (not yet checked) that it is in fact over 600 years since the last one. So if the skies are clear and you're dressed for the occasion (or frozen to the spot) it will be a once in a lifetime (or many lifetimes) experience.

I don't have to tell you how cold it is and it certainly looks like December could likely be the coldest one on record. This morning we recorded our lowest temperature here at this station -12.2°C (10.04°F in old money!); the coldest I have recorded since January 1981 (-15°C). Looking at the charts it seems that it will be just after Christmas where the cold may break? But this intensity of cold will take some shifting and it certainly does not mean it would be over then. With the charts suggesting a cold January (but not as intense as December) bearing in mind that it's all relative it shows it being much drier as well.

It's worth noting that those who follow solar activity will not be surprised by this winter and winters for the next decade as I believe this to be the normal course of events.

Weather Update

Well we could talk about our country's deficit and how much money is being cut this year (£7 billion) and how much our share will be to put towards the rescue package in Ireland (£8 billion!!).

Well there goes that saving then! So I think we'll go back to the weather. The cold snap is still well on its way as said in my last blog.

Of course forecasting snow in this country is a bit like buying a lottery ticket. Yeah I know I'm sitting on the fence but let's go for saying it's possible we'll be sledging next weekend? No responsibility can be held for such a statement but the situation we are looking at setting in next week is very very likely to produce some snow and certainly cold days. By the end of next week temperatures will be struggling to get above freezing by day for a couple of days before it starts to warm up slightly. There could be some quite moderate to severe frosts possible with the keen wind. Also a keen wind chill.

At this stage the maps are showing light snow for Friday 26th November but more substantial snow on Sunday 28th November. Don't be surprised if you have seen something wintry before hand.

Of course this could all change but one things for sure it will get a lot colder.

Looks at the moment like there could be a real early taste of winter this weekend and on into next week. The charts are suggesting high pressure building to the north and east Scandinavian High. This will draw in some cold or very cold air from the continent. As is always the case with this scenario, snow showers or longer spells of snow can develop. It is also possible that if this high pressure becomes blocking and stubborn it could set the trend for the winter ahead.

So get those snow shovels, the de-icer and scrapers at the ready.

Barn

In the local paper this week they have an article regarding the barn in Harpsden. This is made up off pressing blocks which for the most part is deemed to have been used for wallpaper but there is some doubt on this. It's more likely that they were used for material. Of course being in the region of 250+ years of age is it possible that most "wallpaper" would have been made of a material as opposed to just paper. So maybe that's where the truth lies. In fact there used to be a sign on the wall below. Will have to check if it's still there. I believe the sign says please do not touch the wall paper blocks.

When you think about it, if they are in the region 250+ years old and more likely 280+ years old these should hold a greater interest in not just local history but nationwide too.

Where did they come from?

Are there any homes (e.g. National Trust properties) that would still have some of these patterns on the walls?

Depending where I am and what I am doing I am going to be able to give some good indication of imminent rain in the town and surrounding area!! Well the whole UK if needs be.

Of course this is just an experiment but it will be interesting to see how accurate it might be.

So keep a look out when you hear there's rain in the forecast.

Went proper fishing on Tuesday last. First time in 20+ years. Also, I went with a local fishing legend!! So I had to be on my best behaviour, whatever that is. So we roll up. He shows me how to put the hook on with a swivel and we are away, "You go over there and I will stay here." Fine by me. Just great to be here on a Summer evening in August by the river. Kingfisher and others alike for company. He soon pulls in a couple; a Dace and a Roach. Soon after I miss my first bite. There's a surprise! Not when you consider I had a job to keep the worm on. How the heck was I going to keep a fish on!!

My first fish arrives. All of a 3oz Perch. Just grateful I had caught something. Well the rest of the evening moves on and I am bringing fish in quite regularly now but missing more than I am catching. Every time in the water "bang" a bite missed again! I'm informed it does not count unless you banked it is the cry on the other side of the bank as he keeps his net empty. I am not here to gloat, not much! Perch bashing he says. Well they're fish aren't they and where there's small ones there must be big ones. Well that's my theory. Of course he has now not caught anything since the start. Then I hear a remark to say he's changing bait to worm and invading my territory but none the less he still does not increase his haul as I continue to do so with bite after bite. All being watched over by a kingfisher and sky that can only be describe as a horizon on fire. How wonderful it looked.

By now he has packed while I continue in my fine vane of form not wishing for this evening to end so soon. Even with the setting and the sunset alone it would have been wonderful.

Now not wishing to be the bearer of bad news (leave that to the coalition) but as we all know the weather has just been getting worse recently, which was against expectation for many forecasters. But later August, September, October, November (ah!), and December all show a trend towards above average rainfall but all this is speculation!

Henley's Oldest "Living" Tree

Now we are closer to knowing Henley's oldest family I thought now a good time to launch Henley's Oldest Tree. Yes, tree! Okay, it really does not get much sadder but all in a day's thinking. Now where could it be? Well I know where it is not. Sadly the great oak was brutally cut down a few years back. I never did get to the bottom of that as it was in Buckinghamshire and I was passed from pillar to post, from office to office, everyone denying responsibility and saying what did it have to do with me!! My reply was that I was just interested. Not only was this tree magnificent it also had historical links to Charles I when he came from Oxford to Fawley Court as mentioned in The History of Henley-on-Thames (1861).

I deflect as always. So where is the oldest tree now? I am no arborist or tree connoisseur but my guess is it will be a yew or oak. Maybe in Henley park possibly? If you know please let us know too.

I promise I won't do The Oldest Brick Wall tomorrow.

Death of Dogs

How sad it is to read and learn that a third of the dogs in Battersea are killed. Well, okay "put to sleep", but in reality they are killed for whatever reason it is.

Now I am one of many people that have taken a dog from Battersea who has, like most dogs, given more than any human can offer in return. The thought therefore that this dog could have been put to sleep is alarming. In the report it says they are dogs that cannot be re-homed. We know there are these dogs but based on the report for the one we took it would never have been re-homed. And the report bore no relation to the dog we took on. So I am concerned that some of these would have had the same report and been killed.

Now we know that the home environment does a great job but I have to say this news has come as a big shock to me. I thought they never put a healthy animal down. So I am shocked. Or, maybe I am just naive.

Of course the main onus must go to the people who responsibly breed and those people that take on the dogs and then for whatever reason just get rid of them.

This is a eye opener for me and I believe, like the Dogs Home Trust which states it does not put down a healthy animal, is where we must go with Battersea.

Here it is, school holidays. Endless sunshine and warm halcyon days are here. And looking at the weather charts for the next few weeks it looks promising as it has been for much of this summer. Those of you in the west and north west of course will see it quite differently. So why not take the opportunity and come to Henley as many others do. Enjoy the weather and the river. Also the fishing (Was that a plug? Never!). When you come now you can get your gear and bait from The Henley Angling Shop (there's the plug). Of course you could just have a picnic while the kids enjoy the river.

Henley's Oldest Family?

For some time I have been (off and on) trying to find out the oldest known family in the town. Specifically the "working man" families. The ones whose history is not so well documented. As we know, families like the Camoys can go back many generations. I want to find the equal to this in a working man format; a farmer, a banker? You know what I mean.

Some people have told me they are part of the oldest family in the town in terms of generations gone by but I have yet to be convinced.

If you think you are part of Henley's oldest family then please let me know.

Conkers. Have they seen their day?

As many of you will know the horse chestnut is once again suffering with the blight and dry conditions. It begs the question, is this tree on its last legs?

This disease only forms part of a triple whammy over the last few years and could be equal to Dutch elm disease. Can you imagine our countryside without this iconic feature. Could this be a reality in a very few years time as the trees weaken and bows break?

On this point, and very alarming it was, on Monday as I cycled to work (yes I did and I do) I pass Trinity School and the horse chestnut there had broken bows that damaged the wall. This could have had tragic consequence if this had happened while the playgroup play under there. Does not bear thinking about. So I assume this happened over the weekend. A lesson for us all to learn I guess.

This could be due to this damage and become a common occurrence. I assume that the local authorities will be looking into this with so many roadside horse chestnuts locally.

Swallowtail

Some people ride motorbikes, some watch trains and me (not short of a hobby or two) decided the time was now ripe to go and look for the illusive Swallowtail butterfly which only happens to frequent certain sites in Norfolk. Yes, you did read right, Norfolk! Near 400-mile round trip. If I was into bikes we might have done it a bit quicker.

Bags, camera and bits and pieces packed with my brother (yes, there were two "saddos") off we went leaving Henley and the regatta behind us early. We go driving through rubbish laden streets with empty take away boxes (some not so empty) strewn everywhere. Plus bottles and glasses, some of which were broken. It made me feel quite sad but the guys were out already starting to clear up the mess and all credit should go to them as this must have been some task.

Anyway, we left Henley behind us in lovely sunshine and made our journey to just outside Norwich. Strumpshaw Fen to be precise, where we spent another few hours. Came here last year too. 3 mile walk around but not a single Swallowtail to be seen. Yes, other butterflies and some great birds like the Marsh Harrier but no Swallowtails. I think we had more chance of seeing a snowflake in 80 degrees plus.

What is my mission? I want to see and record all our native butterflies (still a few to go). So I say let's go to the next nature reserve further NE towards Great Yarmouth and the Norfolk Broads.

Sun beaming down and hot we reached our destination and on arrival the receptionist says confirms they have seen quite few today. Our enthusiasm rekindled, off we trek. Within a stunning setting with the breeze rustling the broad's reeds and with the milk parsley out we can't lose. I am determined to see one, even if I can't photograph it! We walk the board walk and come across another photographer. He said he was an amateur but with his £8k+ equipment I was not convinced. Anyway I stop and talk while my brother moves on. He shows me the photos of the (yes, you guessed) Swallowtail and they were great. He even described which ones he'd seen. I was beginning to think that they are so rare he was going to tell me their names! "There's one!" I shout. Right in front of me. Fantastic, large and beautiful. So I was calling to me brother to come and see but alas he was too late.

We move on seeing the tops of sail boats like they're drifting between the fields of reeds. So bizarre. He stops while I move on and, yes, around the bend amongst the long horned cattle, almost more bizarre than the sail boats not one but two! They did not settle. I called out once more to my brother but alas again he did not see them.

We are now on our way back. Slightly disappointed that I could not photograph but happy that I have seen them. Now I just wanted my brother to see for himself. We get to a young Oak plantation on which he's noticed some butterflies. Great he's seen them at last but, no, they were not Swallowtails. It was a complete bonus. White Admirals. Unbelievable, never seen the before.

Now, if I have not bored you all to death. In fact you might not have even got this far. We get back to reception feeling quite pleased that we had another one ticked off and a bonus to boot. Lenticular clouds had formed in the beautiful blue sky so it was just getting better and better for me. I promise I will put the anorak away at some stage. The only disappointment of course was the fact that "m' bruver" did not see the Swallowtail. So I said jokingly that perhaps we would see one in the car park? When leaving, yes, you guessed it we did! Right besides the car, the Swallowtail! Thank goodness for that!! So I said "You happy now?" The reply? "I could have saved £3.50!"

Should have gone away

Well the advice I was given by some of the other shopkeepers has proved "unfortunately" to be correct. The last two days have been badly hit by lack of custom due to the Henley Regatta. Not really surprised but certainly disappointed.

Next year I will put a Pimms table out. Even one of the restaurants is closed!

Never mind. Always the optimist. Let's hope we get back to normal as soon as possible.

Love it or hate it

The main start of the Henley Regatta today. For some it will be great fun and for others a nightmare.

I do not listen to Radio Berkshire so much these days. I alternate between stations trying to get a wider view on things but this morning I caught a couple of items of interest. Both sum up the negatives of the regatta. The presenter of the show is a prime example of many. He avoids Henley during the regatta. This affects the local economy and is one reason some shops close. It does not bring in business to the local shops bar a few exceptions. I myself considered closing for this week but as we've only just moved to the new shop decided against it. I will add that another shopkeeper did say to me to go on and close. So it will be interesting to see if it has an effect either way.

I also saw a local lady who lives very close to the main church describing the last day and possible Saturday night of all the drunken activities that take place. Now it's fair to say as long as I can remember there has always been an element of trouble on a Saturday night but like all events it appears to have got worse. I believe that this has not been helped by the regatta committee (or whoever it might be) that took away the the only real link to the locals. That being the fair. This had the effect of spreading people more evenly over the town and made for some excitement for people who were not interested in the rowing but enjoyed the coming of the event and the general good feeling that it brought. It might also have had the effect of reducing the trouble. Then they wanted to take away the fireworks. Fortunately this has been saved at the last hour but you do wonder if it's just a matter of time.

The troubles are not down to anything in the main but drink. I remember very well once while down by the course with my young family when there was more public access drunken crew members crushing and breaking champagne glasses and bottles. Leaving them there and putting them into the river. That put us off for many years. I also recall when working at a local garage that we had to bring in all the hanging baskets, cars and anything else that was free standing. Also the local pub like some others would close there doors to only local clientèle.

I know it all sounds negative but the point I am making is that in many ways lots of things have not changed as much as you might think.

Bring back the fair and keep the fireworks. This would be a step forward. Of course, in my humble opinion.

One other thing I have wondered. If it is such a big sporting affair like Ascot, Wimbledon, etc. why do we never have TV coverage?

Just to refresh you, during World Ware Two a Lancaster bomber crashed (1942?) at where Abraham's estate now it (I am told Crisp Road in fact). All on board were killed in this tragic event but has the truth come to light? If you know please let us know.

Still around 20°C t0 21°C but no significant rainfall on the cards at present, unless Sunday 27th presents any thunderstorm.

Armed Forces Day

This Saturday throughout the country we see this very special day. Most importantly a day to mark our armed forces and all the good that these men and women do. Forget the politics, forget what you might think about the wars (right or wrong). One thing is for certain. We can all be immensely proud of what these people do. Yes, it is their choice to join but that must not deflect the support we give. When serving after serving and sadly after loss of lives there should never be questions raised to the support these people deserve. That is especially when coming back from their duty. This goes for the families as well. You must be so proud of them all and from my own humble view, thank you.

It is also worth noting that there are events going on all over the country, though sadly not in Henley, but both Wallingford and Reading seem to be doing things. Perhaps next year we can in Henley?

Regatta Weather

Update on the weather for Henley Regatta. We do have slightly conflicting scenarios and that always makes it more interesting.

At this point it does look to be cooler and cloudier compared to what we have been having. As pressure is falling to the west of the country this could have the effect of drawing up some warm humid air and that's where I think we might be. With the Azores ridge picking up we could see a few showery outbreaks interspersed with some warm or very warm sun. Then a drier brighter fresher feel to the end of the event.

Still a little way to go though. So still could change!

Harpsden Fete

Today we made a pilgrimage to Harpsden Fete. I have to confess I have not been for a few years but on a beautiful summer afternoon in June and a lovely setting, which has fortunately not changed, we set ourselves out to enjoy the festivities (see photos below). And do you know that the pin bowling is still in the same place, after all these years. My claim to fame is winning this event in many years gone by. In fact when still at school. I excitably waited until the end to make sure no one beat me and I left with my new fountain pen set. Yes kids that's the one you put ink cartridges in.

We of course bumped into people we know and those you may have seen from one year to another. One of them remarked to me "nothing's change". I replied "thank god". This is what England/Britain is all about and may it long remain so.

So well done as always to the volunteers.

Fishing Season Starts

It's here at last. Fishing season is up and running. Hopefully the lack of rain does not spoil the start. Weather looks almost perfect; slightly overcast with a gentle NE wind. So find that nice sheltered spot.

That time of year

Here we go; Ascot, Wimbledon and Henley. It's that time of year again. As for Henley let's just remind people who visit our lovely town there is more to Henley than just the regatta so please take some time out to visit the surrounding area and attractions.

Remember that visitor quote? When asked "Are you enjoying the rowing?" the reply was along the lines of "Rowing!?! I haven't even seen a river." as he walked from the TV screen watching Wimbledon to return the long way to the bar!!

Another little fact that some people might not know and this is that the regatta takes place in Berkshire, as Radio Berkshire are always to ready to remind us (I think it's their claim to the town. FREE tickets anyone!) Henley though is in Oxfordshire.

The weather at this stage is looking to be a cool start with maybe some showers. Friday only being around 18°C but there's a little way to go so watch this space.

There used to be a saying. Fine Ascot wet Henley and visa versa. Mind you I think that's about as reliable as having an English Wimbledon champion!!

Market Place

I recently heard through the grapevine that someone had written in the local paper of how wonderful the Market Place is now. Well I could not disagree more. It might be good for certain times and weather but it's not what a traditional market town is all about. Okay if you're happy to have restaurants and cafés and not retail shops then it's right for you. To me it's about having a lively town centre where people can pull over, nip out or even park for ten minutes, and get the goods they want.

It was this in mind when we had "red square" (Falaise Square). It actually catered for both aspects but that was destroyed after a very short life span and of course more cost that did not need to happen.

Fishing

For those visitors I have checked with the local fishing club secretary who of course welcomes new members.

It is also worth a note that you can fish from New Street and Red Lion Hotel lawn up to the small wooden bridge at the end of the promenade (just before Marsh Lock) for FREE*.

Relocated

Well, after an absent of nearly 9 months we are, as we said we would be (began to wonder), back in town with the new shop up and running. Not only with all the usual goods on offer (car parts, bike spares and repairs) but with the added addition of fishing tackle, shortly to be joined by fresh bait. A long time waiting but now it's here at 57 Reading Road, Henley-on-Thames, RG9 1AB.

We would like to thank all those with their good wishes and continued support. It is always appreciated but even more so in these economic hard times.

We have priced the goods to sell. So there's some great deals, as always, but probably even better. So pop by and take a look.

I would add that one of the motivations behind the continuation of the shop (other than not being of an age where jobs coming flying at you - if they ever did!!) was the desire to be close to the town and the memory of shops from the past. Of course in certain cases you have to be of an age to remember some of them; Hawkers, Hammants, Brocks, to name but just a few. All these shops were interesting in their format and had a feel good factor. If we can come close to what they achieved then we will have achieved something ourselves.

Please help us meet any present relatives, Grandfather Cyril Aubrey Walter from 3 Marmion Rd Wargrave, eldest sister Mabel, Cyril married Rachel Thomas (Chef) from Wargrave Manor after returning from WW1 where two of his brothers were killed, I believe their names are on a memorial in the town square? Cyril and Rachel emigrated to Australia in 1927. We are coming in August and would love to share a pint with any Walters in the neighbourhood. Regards, Denise and Brian Beazley (mother Mary Walter, uncle George Walter)"

Aircraft

The above comment might sound stupid (especially to those in the know).

If all aircraft are banned from flying because of the current conditions (volcano dust/ashes/ice/whatever), who then gives the permission to send up a 747 to see if it is safe, and over populated land? Now, I might be missing something here but is that not a bit like (but with far bigger consequences) collecting your car that has failed its MOT from the garage (miserably - no brakes etc.) and then driving at a wall to see what happens!?!

White Christmas

No not Bing Crosby and Co., but the usual weather topic at this time of year. Goodness knows why as they are as rare as an elephant walking up Hart Street with Boris Johnson as its "jockey". Mind you, saying that, he probably would ride it!

Anyway the point is this. If there is one, why do we put so much emphasis on it for one day. Well we know the reason really which I won't go into here.

This Christmas looks at present to be a cold day with variable cloud and sunshine. So could feel more in line with what we would like. Indeed if the night is clear we could have a white start with a frost.

Puddles!!

I have been meaning to "Meldrew" about this one for a while. For ten years plus I have traveled one particular piece of road day in day out. Namely Greys Road between the the pub and just after Pinders. As far back as I can remember, once we start to get no more than moderate rain this stretch of road gets lots of puddles. It is of course a lot worse when the rain is heavy. I know some work has been done over the years but this has failed to resolve the problem. I am no engineer but I can't for the life of me imagine that its that hard to solve. It seems as if there could be quite an easy solution. They did put drains in both these places but these have not worked. I would suggest that they do not get cleaned out as regularly as they should do.

Both these large puddles are in dips and on a camber. Now if the camber is leveled out in the first place this should spread the water. Then as they are both next to a good grass verge and field; dig out a flood ditch or covert. This I am sure will help to resolve the problem. Not necessarily fully but certainly reduce them and make it safer when cars are forced to go on the opposite side of the road.

Redwings

Just a follow on from yesterday's blog and the link to the Redwing RSPB website page. Did you notice the statistics with regards to breeding and visiting? Only 2 to 17 pairs breeding in the UK. Who knows that!?! With 685,000 wintering; makes you wonder why the 2 to 17 bother!

Holly

Many of you will have noticed the berries on many plants including the Holly. The other day I picked some for a display and decided to pick a little more the following day. "What berries?!?" They had all gone. No, not picked by us or any other humans but eaten by masses of Redwings and other winter thrushes. So you better be quick they are doing the area in some style. I mean this bush was swamped, then nothing.

There are loads of Red Wings about; the most I have seen for a few years. In past years this has been down to a failure of berry crops abroad and some say this is an indication of a hard winter. So we will have to see. Some forecasters are saying we will have a colder winter than normal (so I am getting the BBQ out!!). Now the one thing I am hoping for is because of this invasion of thrushes that the Waxwing will make one of its infrequent visits. So keep an eye out.

River and Rowing Museum

Seeing as I am on the topic of planning it reminded me of the River and Rowing Museum building and how on earth that ever got planning permission. Indeed when it was first built I actually thought it looked like a DIY store. Personally I think it is a ghastly building and I know that I am not alone in this. My suspicions were confirmed when I heard that it won an architect award though I do not know whether this is true or not.

I know that I am an old cynic (now more so) but again I feel when things tend to get awards like this it's there to distract from what me might otherwise think. In other words can I really be the only one that thinks it?

One thing I must add and it's of great importance. That is that in no way does the building distract from the contents of the museum itself. This is of great value and interest and well worth a visit. Just close your eyes until you get inside!!

Razor Wire

Now forgive me as I know this is old hat but as I was driving passed Friar Park, as I do on many occasions, I just thought I had to put my ten pennies worth in.

Personally I am like many others against the unsightly (at best) security and found it amazing at the time that the permission was so granted. If you or I were to request such ghastly security for our more humbles dwellings, would we be granted permission? I doubt it and certainly from my perspective I would not want it.

Of course I appreciate the necessity of security at this place especially after the incidents that occurred when the man himself lived there but I feel that today it is over the top, unsightly and what is already in place looks to be adequate.

It is such a shame that this sort of thing draws attention and almost makes it look like an entrance to a prison and not a great house and gardens which had been so lovingly restored.

I don't know about you but I cannot think of anywhere in the area that has such fortification. Please tell me if you know and are those people any less concerned about their security? I don't think so.

Let's hope that common sense prevails and this does not take place.

Weather again!!

I just thought I would mention this seeing as the weather has been so warm. Some people speak of it as an Indian summer (American Indians that is). Well it could be although we would expect more sunshine and an Indian summer can take place in October or November but technically not until we have had the first frost which we have had now. The warmth, although very mild and above the average, is not as uncommon as you might think. It has to go a long way to beat the record of above 29°C but that was at the begin of the month so is not really a true representation; none the less it was October. The record for the last week or so is around 23°C (73°F) somewhere along the south coast on or around the 26th. So a better guide to this time of month. It's worth noting that yesterday Benson was the warmest place in the UK at 19°C (66°F).

Colours / Red Kites

Well what a cracking day Sunday was weather wise and this looks to continue for most of the week. Out walking the dog and seeing some fantastic colours and light contrast. And to cap it all another wonderful aerial display by those majestic Red Kites darting and diving into each other and their colours matching all those Autumn colours of the trees.

small print / LARGE "KEEP OUT"

Now I know this is not local issue but doesn't it just get up your nose that with anything we buy such as insurance and pensions (well almost everything) there's always one thing there to protect the company; the small print. How many of us read this in full, in part or not at all? I think it's fair to say that the print is like that so they know we are unlikely to read it. And to understand it is another matter! It's not there to protect us. It's there to protect them. Now we know this is nothing new but with a recent event it prompted me to blog to get it off my chest.

Now who like me hates signs that say, "PRIVATE KEEP OUT!" Surely "private" warrants enough. I always find that so aggressive. It's like, "As you know we are not in the least bit friendly but we'll draw your attention anyway." The point I'm trtying to make is that when we sign these things, instead of having the small print let's have the LARGE print at the top of the contract or paperwork with "WARNING READ AND UNDERSTAND CAREFULLY!" at least it would draw our attention to what we should really know at the beginning, not the end.

Anyway, got that off m'chest!!

Now, with the equinox here (equal daylight and nighttime hours) we might expect a possible change in the weather but the good news is, at this present time looking ahead on the 16 day weather charts, that it will follow the same sort of pattern with high pressure holding fast.

On this basis we could be heading for one of the driest Septembers on record but not the driest as we have already just about beaten that. This was in 1959 with a meagre 8mm of rain. This month so far we've had just over 12mm.

You, me, us.

It is very hard to know where you resolve such a problem as I am about the describe.

Recently our mother had a fall at her residential flat which culminated in her having to go into hospital. Bearing in mind she had deteriorated in her physical ability long before it was already becoming increasingly difficult for her (like many I guess) anyway. After a short stay in the Royal Berks she recovered slightly. In fact she recovered enough to be transferred to her local hospital. I have to say I have nothing but admiration for what they (the staff) do. Yes, there are maybe one or two that look as though they are not really there for the job but for the most part they are great. It goes without saying that they do not get the recognition they deserve.

Anyway 12 weeks on Mum has made a good recovery and has been in a position to move on. Unfortunately she is unable to return to her home. Now as you can imagine after much paperwork and running around, with the support of the family, to try and sort things out my Mum decided that because she needs constant supervision a home is what she wanted. After living the best part of 60 years in Henley I thought at least I will be able to get her into a local home. Thought it would be a bit like kid's school catchment areas.

How naive of me. What a fool I was. Of course it does not work that way, unless you have a very very good bank account. Believe you me and to those of you that already know please forgive me but this it is purely about money. £700 to £800 a week!! It is of course difficult to know where to draw the line but with these sort of figures you punish both ends of the spectrum. If you have money and there's a space in your location then it's a case of, "Come on in!" Well, at least until the money has run out!

What happens then if you don't have the money. I suspect this will be the majority. Well sorry, no can do, unless the family or anyone else for that matter can come up with the shortfall. I do wonder and worry about the people that do not have their families to look out for them. Can this be right?

After all this however there is an acceptance of the situation. We're not happy but are being pragmatic, understanding the need to resolve the situation and course as little stress to Mum (bright as a button, it's the body that's failed) as possible. We had previously looked at other homes in the area. As I now realised she had very little or no hope going to the preferred venue where of course her family and friends could visit easily I looked at the other homes recommended anyway. Yes, they were all pleasant (as homes go) and could facilitate my/our Mum's needs.

Of course, nothing happens, bearing in mind I took this up around the fifth week of my Mum's hospital stay. Then at around 11 weeks I get a call that a home in Goring can take my mother on Monday 7th September. You guessed it! It was one that I had not visited because they did not give me as a choice before. I/we say yes. I go to visit. Bear in mind they had already assessed and told my Mum she would be going there! Visit done, good chat with the owner or lady in charge, very pleasant indeed. A nice little home with some like minded people who had severe physical disabilities but as bright as Mum. So I say to Mum that I think she could get on alright there. I did forget to say that this is supposedly a temporary position until something more convenient comes up but I'm afraid I just do not believe that. This is because I know rooms have become available in the preferred home and gone to people who came in after Mum's hospital stay. No doubt from financially sound people and good luck to them but that's the very reason I do not think this home would be temporary. Anyway it did not matter in the end. After getting mum into the condition of readiness and in her own way looking forward to getting out of hospital I phone the lady coordinating it to say all's okay and ready to go when she drops a bombshell. She tells me it's not happening as they cannot come to an agreement on the figures. I am angry and disappointed and as I said to the lady surely that's what you sort out first but they apparently did not. What a waste of everybody's time and money let alone the extra stress caused.

Now, none of us, I guess, have a divine right to anything but once these things are in place our expectations are raised and that's the only way we can judge it. In the old days we would not have such things in place and we as families would look after our own. Today that is made much more difficult by the way we live. Rightly or wrongly that's the way it is. I do not want my mother to go into a home as many others and will do everything I can to protect that interest even to point of trying to organise her to go back to her home but it's 24 hours supervision and the right care that's needed. I will not be bullied into making a decision for the sake of it though.

Remember as I said before this could be any one of us in this position and I can only see it getting more complicated as time goes on with costa soaring.

In my humble position we should not penalise the thrifty with their money and by the same token we should not punish those that through no fault of their own cannot pay.

Please Please. Take Note.

I understand that there are some issues with the 80s Rewind Festival to do with things such as parking and people not receiving tickets with some people unable to get in contact with any official body.

I would like to point out that we at henleyonthames.org are nothing to do with the promotion of the event. We were contacted at the back end of 2008 asking if we would put the link and promotion up on our site which we duly did but we are not responsible for any of the issues that may arise at this event.

I will add that, as we have done so far, we will help anyone andbody that needs information that we can reliably supply. It just appears that due to the popularity of the site that its system has been unable to cope. So as an added consequence of this we have had more than our usual amount of enquiries which where we are able to assist we will.

Anyway I hope that clears a few things up and like most events of this scale I guess there will always be issues. I am sure the promoter will take note and improve for future events.

Rewind Festival Weather - Showers

A band of quite heavy showers pulling through from 11:30 to 14:00 then a drier slot before another potential shower band. So keep that umbrella up. Current temperature: 18°C (64°F).

1908 Boundary Marker

Aeroplane

Did you see this? At around 3pm from my window I saw a large aeroplane that from my angle looked to be just above the tree tops along with a roaring noise as it made a sharp up lift banking right. It appears that there was no apparent distress and it just flew off westwards. One lady I just spoke to said the same. It most definitely looked in trouble but fortunately if that was the case it recovered.

I hear that local Henley MP John Howell is going to do a charity stayover on Temple Island. He'll only be set free once his target has been reached. Not quite "I'm a Celebrity, Get me out of here." (I think that's what it's called) but none-the-less very plaudible as is anything that raise funds. Not quite sure what it's for. Perhaps someone at HQ could enlighten us? But very "Henley" don't you think? Have you seen Temple Island these days?

Not sure what the amount is, but anything under £100k is not enough!!

Ordnance Survey Bench Marks in Henley

A little while ago (28th March 2009 to be precise) we received a comment on one of our photos of Reading Road in Henley. This related to an Ordnance Survey bench mark that is carved into the side of the building in this photo. This got us more interested in bench marks in general and we asked for a article about them in the Henley area to be produced. The site visitor kindly obliged and the resulting short article about Ordnance Survey Bench Marks in Henley is now finished and can be read on the main website. Quite an interesting read!

Now we are getting very close to the 80s Revival Rewind Festival with the threat of some dandy highwaymen and, even more worryingly, some underdressed party goers. Now the china in their hands might be a cup and saucer with a rich tea biscuit on the edge but still this could be a great day. Although myself a late 60s/70s child and young man the eighties did hold some bizarre bands and groups. Indeed if that's what you call them but if you are going have a great time.

Shameful

This particular blog gives me very little satisfation in having to draw attention to the ongoing problems regarding the effect of the regatta and the consequences of all the litter strewn about. I believe one person described it as a "drink fest". This is what many locals have seen it as for a while. We need to get a grip on this and bring back a regatta fit for the town and its inhabitants along with entrants and people who genuinely want to attend such a great event. But, come on, the powers that be recognise the need to give back to the people of the town the event that we deserve. Not just the things for the corporates, but the fair, the fireworks and no closure of public rights of way. This has been let go of for far too long and needs addressing!!

I happened to take a nice long leisurely walk on regatta Saturday; something I have not done for a while and with camera in hand (see Henley Regatta 2009 photos), tooks some photos of people enjoying themselves. Mostly at this stage not worse for drink but suspect that some were on the cusps. Nothing wrong with that at all and the cheering of one of the races I saw was fantastic, the expressions of those that were participating was a sight to behold.

However, it was not long before my leisurely walk was spoilt and tarnished by those that have no respect for our land. It hurts me to have to descibe this as a water waste bin where people's discarded drinks bottles, plates, take away cartons, etc. litter the footpath and this was not the Berkshire bank which I understand was far worse. I do not show the photos for pleasure but for the reality of the effect of the day. Why oh why do we do this to our lovely town and more so our counties and country? It is done with out consequence. Surely we must take a much harder approach.

When attending Gillott's (yes, we did go there) many of you will remember "Chalkie" Mr White, the hand on the shoulder, "You don't want to leave that there on the ground please pick it up." and that's what you did, put it in the bin.

I have gone on enough but judge for yourselves from the photos what you'd prefer. I know which I prefer and I am sure you do to.

BBQ

Well those of a sensitive nature might want to turn away. Where is this BBQ summer?

It looks certain that for the rest of this month we won't see it with average or just below average temperatures. A lot of dry weather though from midweek next week, but no heatwave!! The worst part, but of course no guarantees, is that the weather would normally settle into a pattern by mid July and what you get now is a pretty good guide to what you might expect for the rest of the summer. Sorry!! In our favour is that the weather is as so often stated not an exact science and will always throw up some surprises.

Chinook

Not wishing to put a dampener on a fantastic opportunity for children to see this beast but it does beg a few questions. Why was it only one school that was present? Was the pilot or crew associated with the school? Indeed, were the other schools asked and if so did they decline the offer? It just seems such a shame that others missed this event. I know like others that these pass over our area quite often so it was not a major issue for a divert to occur. Just a pity more didn't get to see it.

Did one of the members of the crew manage to get the shopping done whilst on the ground!?!

To those that don't know (I only do because of my association with the weather) a Chinook is in simple terms a name for a warm wind off the mountains in the USA.

Thoughts on Fireworks

As I've previously said I am totally in favour of the fireworks but the rules must apply. I wonder what people would say if a firework went astray and injured a spectator (which has happened at other displays). Who would pay and who would be held responsible? These are questions that would only arise in such circumstances but in this day of litigation and responsibility it means regrettably that common sense does not prevail in most walks of life.

I suspect there is more to this than meets the eye and as I have said before I must stick by my convictions and say no footpath should be closed. The council has quite rightly said that a pressure group had raised concerns but if the application had been sent in time the event might have gone ahead. In a statement by the firework committee it says that permission had been granted. Who by and who could give that sort of authority? Surely there must be some evidence of this and someone to answer to.

Now Mr Henry Kelly and co. on Radio Berkshire do not know that these local footpath closures in Henley (as previously stated) have been a contentious issue for many years and a lot of people are totally against their closure, myself being one of them. There seems to be an arrogance about these closures from the Regatta side and it's not about health and safety or maybe even common sense it's just something they have been doing. So before the said people make a judgement please get the facts right. Just the same for me, if I am wrong please inform with facts so as I can understand.

Of course it goes without saying, if the original people had not pulled the plug we wouldn't have a problem in the fist place. By the way when did they actually pull out? Did it really give time for people to reorganise?I wonder. Call me cynical but it does make you think!

Am I right in saying that the fireworks that took place had the footpath running very close to the display and people would gather near it? Was that footpath any less distance from the display? Of course this was quite rightly not closed but it begs a question.

Perhaps some local landowner in the future could afford the space (of course not too close to a footpath). Maybe Fawley Court or even the management college. I know both have footpaths but there is ample land to do it safety and it's level and of course next to the Regatta course itself.

Fireworks Cancelled

The Henley Regatta Fireworks that had only recently been saved have now been cancelled at the last moment. My understanding is that it is to do with the foot path that runs at the bottom of Sham Hill, please correct if I am wrong.

Apparently the people that had worked closely together to save the fireworks either overlooked this potential problem, or did not perceive it as a problem in the first place. It was one I had raised earlier and just assumed someone would have sorted. Now it looks unfortunately not to have been the case. Now footpath closures are contentious anywhere and at any time and I have to say, like many people are against closure for most reasons particularly including the Regatta footpath along the river, also closed for the Henley Festival, which I feel should never be closed. There are many of the same opinion and who still walk this path as their right. I do not know of any legal reason why you can or cannot exercise your rights to access the path, perhaps someone could tell me. I have been told by local people that still walk it that it is the right of anyone to walk at any time, is that right?

I have to be consistent here and although I am in total favour of the fireworks and acknowledge the great effort these people/land owner and organisers have done in recent weeks to save this one last event for locals and the like but I have to stand by my own views and I think that no footpaths should be closed unless for exceptional circumstances. I think I could have lived with this being closed for the display itself, but not either side of that. Of course this would not have been an issue if the powers that be had not withdrawn in the first place, then we could all have enjoyed the fireworks again and from that great family view point on Sham Hill.

*APPARENTLY YOU HAVE TO GIVE AT LEAST SIX WEEKS NOTICE TO THE LOCAL AUTHORITY FOR FOOTPATH CLOSURES.

It does ask the question who missed this particular criteria and who informed them at this stage? I feel that on this occasion that the council could grant an emergency closure so as not to disappointment the many people and still feel this could be done!!

That Time of the Year

Well here we are again. "Two oars and a load of rowlocks." Now, to the visitor this brings high spirits (not just in mind) and a fashion parade. But for many locals it does the opposite with some shops and businesses closing due to lack of trade and is of a contentious nature. Of course it's a great rowing event with masses of excellent talent but now it is not the local family event that it once was. Just ask around. I feel today its a corporate event for people to be seen and a place where they can drink their Pimm's and watch Wimbledon.

In the past we could roam freely in front of the tents, have a picnic and watch some rowing in this most wonderful part of the world. We could then visit the fair next to the enclosure, mix with the crews and toffs on the rides. We'd all get together in the evenings, especially on Saturday - the BIG day where we'd have great fun generally in anticipation of the grand finale of fireworks and that last ride on the waltzer. So come on you guys who make the difference, bring back the people's regatta for at least one day for the people of the town.

This is an event that should be encouraged for maximum benefit to all. Let's do an Ascot and have a locals day.

House Martins

Here's one for the ornithologists. Coming back to work today I saw a flight of House Martins on wing of course. Can you tell me what they were called and where they used to live? I assume they have been coming to the shores for thousand if not millions of years - before we built houses!

Summer Solstice

Here we are, coming up to the Summer Solstice; the longest day and the official start of Summer. I have always been fascinated by these sorts of events. I know, sad isn't it, but doing a bit of minor research I note that the sunrises and sunsets for our postcode in Henley are the same for the 18th, 19th and 20th of June. Are they not all equally the longest day? My only thought is that it must be seconds of variation. Still I am sure someone will know and of course I could make the extra effort and search the web!!

London's sunrise on 21st June is at 4:42am and sunset is at 9:20pm. Sunrise at 4:42am is London's earliest from 11th-22nd June but the sunset maximum is 9:21pm from 22nd June.

Well I hear today that the Henley Regatta fireworks have been saved and will take place on Sham Hill near Henley (will need to find somewhere else to sit now!) with the kind permission of the land owner. So fair play to them.

Just a thought though, as on a previous blog, could you tone down the noise just a little to protect wildlife and such.
