So it's the last of the fireworks at the Regatta. Tinged with sadness but if the reasons given for their demise are genuine then it's understandable. My more cynical side tells me though that the real reason might be something else. The fireworks were the last real attachment for the local people to have any feelings for this now almost completely corporate event. Those that are old enough will remember a week of anticipation for the fair and then the last night of the Regatta being finished of by the fireworks - well, no more.
I do wonder if this had not involved oarsmen would the same decision been made?
The Regatta is a more corporate orientated event like most others these days.
"Have you seen any rowing yet?" a guest was asked, "Rowing? I haven't even seen any river yet!" as he watches Wimbledon on the 40" wide screen.

I for one am at an age where I will not miss the fireworks as I think they are far too loud. Yes I'm a grumpy old git. And they do no favours to the wildlife, dog owners, etc.
I suppose that the festivals will be next! Hopefully. See, I told you I was a grumpy old man.
