Most Famous

Having other thoughts while doing the early morning jog!

Who is Henley's most famous person ever? Difficult one...

First to call would, I guess, be Mary Blandy - but we all know that one.

Surely there must be someone voting for the good Gainsborough - the engineer, perhaps?

Prince Rupert - the swashbuckling man of his time?

Let us know.

They were all offside!

Good morning all,

Having a chat with another associated friend (by that I mean a person I have known for many years) looking for him to contribute to the blog, we got onto talking about football and a little story...

Can't quite remember who they were playing (this is the old town side), but after the game a young lad asked the goalkeeper for his autograph (we will keep names at a distance at present). The keeper is surprised and says to the lad, "I have never been ask for my autograph before." on which the boy replies, "I have never seen a goalkeeper let in 17 goals before!".

And yes, they were all offside ref!!

Dutch Barn

Driving in the morning always prompts my memory and the changes I have seen in my life and I encourage others to share their memories and photos (Don't forget you can scan and send them to us with, of course, a full tribute to your contribution).

I was passing the shops at Wooton Manor where I started my first part time job in, the then, supermarket delivering goods business on a basket bike. You know, the one that featured in Open All Hours!! It's now a One Stop shop? Anyway, I recalled the dutch barn that was there before any buildings took place at Wooton Manor and King James Way. I remembered the catle crossing the road where the roundabout is now. Yes, a mud patch indeed. You did not see than many cars go past. I'm not sure what year that would be but guess it was late 50s to early 60s.

Perhaps one of you could let us know?

Pie in the Sky

Actually that should read "aeroplanes in the sky". Out walking the dog at the crack of dawn (yes, must be mad), the best part of the day as far as I am concerned, even at -6°C but another corking sunrise!

I am always looking around for all sorts of birds, animals, etc. and often look to the sky and the wonder of all the aeroplanes at different levels. My record to date stands at 22 visible. How far would this be? Over 50 miles? Amazing! 22 and I could not hear one of them, and no, I am not deaf!

Oldest Family

It's always interesting talking to people in the shop and one discussion we were having recently was about who are the oldest family in Henley?

Let's try and figure out that here soon...

Our family have been in Henley and the local area for at least 8 generations.

Can you beat it?

Birds

On my morning constitution with the "mutt" it bought to mind in these weather conditions the sort of interesting birds that are being drawn by the warmer climes of the UK.

I noticed one of the largest amounts of Lapwings I have seen in years. Also Redwings or Winter Thrushes, as they are sometimes called.

Have you seen any Waxwings? If so, let us know. Send in a photo to the site which of course you will be credited for once verified.

Pot Holes

Not sure how true this is but quite amusing none the less.

"Jungle drums" tell me there was an incident on Henley Bridge when allegedly some people appeared from the underside of an articulated lorry but only after hitting the pot hole on the bridge to dislodge them!!

Priorities = Flowers?

Here we go again. Only recently were we discussing the recent issue about Henley in Bloom and whether it should be given to local contractors/gardeners as it was in the past. Now I hear through the grapevine that a local garden centre has stepped in. Good - good for them, it's great to see Henley with a nice array of flower beds and baskets.

Now that the council have saved some more of our money (or the garden centre has) perhaps they can get priorities right and improve the roads around Henley?

I do have one idea though, what do you think? How about when they are doing the flower beds they put some compost in the pot holes? With a few geranuims this could improve our chance of winning the competition!!

Market Day

Is Henley's market going to become a thing of the past?

Another reason why people might not shop in Henley.
